Choosing a BMW engine is not merely a technical exercise — it is a declaration of intent. Are you a long-haul motorway cruiser who prizes efficiency above all else? A spirited weekend driver who demands instant throttle response and a sonorous exhaust note? Or somewhere pleasingly in between? BMW's modern engine range caters to all of the above, but only if you know where to look.

In this guide, we cut through the noise to help you understand three of the most significant BMW engines on the market today: the celebrated BMW B58 engine, the diesel BMW N47 engine, and the quietly brilliant B48 engine. If you're looking to buy a BMW engine for a replacement or simply trying to understand which unit suits your needs before purchasing a car, this is the guide you need.

If there is one engine that has come to define the modern BMW, it is the B58 engine. Introduced in 2015 as a replacement for the N55 engine, the BMW B58 engine was first launched in the F30 340i and has since spread across more than 41 models, from the compact 1 Series to the Toyota GR Supra. It is, by any measure, the best BMW engine of the current generation.

Featuring an inline-six configuration paired with a twin-scroll turbocharger, the B58 delivers between 320 and 380 horsepower and 332 to 369 foot-pounds of torque in stock form. What makes this particularly impressive is how it delivers that power. The engine produces ample low-end torque yet revs cleanly toward the top of the dial — robust enough for performance cars like the Supra, yet refined enough for luxury cruisers like the BMW 7 Series models.

The engineering choices underpinning the B58 are equally significant. Compared with its N55 predecessor, the B58 features a 20% increase in boost pressure, a closed-deck engine block design, and an increase in compression ratio to 11.0:1. Additional highlights include a single twin-scroll turbocharger paired with an air-to-liquid intercooler to reduce turbo lag, a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, and an advanced dual injection system combining direct and port injection, improving fuel atomisation and enabling higher power outputs with cleaner emissions.

"Often called the modern-day 2JZ, the B58 is the last great naturally gifted BMW inline-six — and quite possibly the finest turbocharged road car engine of its generation."

Reliability, historically a sore point for turbocharged BMW engines, has been substantially addressed here. When maintained correctly and frequently with high-quality BMW engine parts, the B58 is a very reliable engine, especially compared to older BMW straight-six engines like the N54 and N55. BMW engineers the B58 with longevity in mind, and it is capable of exceeding 300,000 miles when paired with disciplined maintenance.

For drivers who want to push further still, the tuning potential is exceptional. Independent dyno tests have shown the engine can produce upwards of 400 horsepower at the crank, showcasing its true potential. In late 2025, BMW updated the B58 in the M240i, M340i, and M440i with revised internals, boosting output to 386 hp, confirming that this engine still has plenty of road ahead of it.

If you want to buy a BMW that offers thrilling performance, genuine refinement, and extraordinary long-term potential, the B58 is where to start. It is the engine that earns its keep every single time you press the throttle.

Best for: performance drivers, enthusiasts, & track-day regulars.

Ask any British company-car driver from the late 2000s to the mid-2010s what engine powered their BMW, and there's a reasonable chance the answer is the BMW N47 engine. Launched in 2007 as the successor to the M47, the N47 brought numerous advancements in terms of efficiency, performance, and emissions, powering a wide range of BMW models from the compact 1 Series to the 5 Series models.

Its greatest virtue is economy. Thanks to its advanced design and turbocharging, the N47 delivers excellent highway mileage, making it a great choice for long-distance travels, and this efficiency does not come at the expense of performance, as the engine provides a responsive and dynamic driving experience. The power output of the N47 ranges from 94 to 215 horsepower, catering to a wide range of driving needs from economical daily commutes to more spirited driving in the UK.

However, it would be remiss to discuss the BMW N47 engine without addressing its most significant weakness. In 2007, the N47 quickly became notorious for a major issue — its rear-mounted timing chain, placed on the gearbox side, which is extremely expensive to replace as it requires engine removal. BMW made several improvements after 2011, and versions from 2013 onwards are considerably more reliable, but if you're considering buying a BMW equipped with the N47 engine, choosing a model from 2013 onwards and verifying the service history is strongly recommended.

For buyers who cover significant motorway mileage and want to keep running costs to a minimum, and who are purchasing from a reliable source with a known history, there are few better-value BMWs. The N47 remains a workhorse with a strong parts ecosystem, and at MT Auto Parts, we stock a wide range of N47 engine parts and complete N47 BMW engines to keep these cars running exactly as they should.

This engine is best for long-distance commuters & high-mileage motorway drivers.

Say “BMW B48 engine” to a dedicated BMW enthusiast, and it is often overshadowed by the more celebrated B58. That would be a mistake. The BMW B48 powers everything from a family BMW X1 model to the performance-oriented M235i BMWs. And it does so with a quiet competence that makes it one of the most underappreciated engines in BMW's entire history.

Part of BMW's modular B-series engine family, the B48 is praised for its reliability, efficiency, and tuning potential. It sits neatly between the N47 diesel and the B58 six-cylinder engine — offering petrol improvements, more than adequate everyday performance, and real-world fuel economy that makes financial sense. Its undersquare design supplies higher torque outputs at lower RPMs, which is helpful and more efficient for everyday driving.

The engine is highly refined, designed to offer a balance of power and fuel efficiency, with an advanced variable valve timing system and turbocharging providing quick throttle response and seamless acceleration, even at lower speeds. In real-world conditions, many B48 engines comfortably reach 120,000–160,000 miles or more, especially when serviced correctly.

The 2018 Technical Update brought meaningful improvements: a revised single-piece timing chain replaced the earlier two-part design, and lighter forged internals further improved refinement. As of now, the B48 appears to be the most reliable four-cylinder engine BMW has ever produced — a significant claim for a brand with decades of engineering heritage.

For drivers who want a petrol BMW that is effortless day-to-day, genuinely pleasant to drive, and straightforward to maintain, the B48 engine deserves to be at the top of the shortlist. It is the engine that suits the vast majority of drivers without compromise, and one that punches far above its modest billing.

Best for: daily drivers, urban commuters & practical enthusiasts.

Making Your Decision: So, Which BMW Engine Is Right for You in 2026?

The honest answer is that there is no universally superior choice — only the engine best suited to how and where you drive. If you cover significant motorway miles and want to keep fuel bills to a minimum, the N47 remains a compelling diesel option, provided you choose a post-2013 example with a documented service history. If you want a refined, dependable petrol engine for everyday use, one that rewards careful maintenance and occasional spirited driving in equal measure, the B48 engine is the pragmatist's choice and arguably the best-kept secret in BMW's modern range. And if you want the best BMW engine experience that modern engineering can offer, something that genuinely stirs the soul on a clear A-road and holds its value as a future classic, the BMW B58 engine is in a category of its own.

All three engines are well represented in BMW motors across the UK market, and all three benefit enormously from the variety of BMW parts and attentive maintenance. Whichever engine sits beneath your bonnet, keeping it in excellent condition with genuine or high-specification used components is the single most effective investment a BMW driver can make.

At MT Auto Parts, we carry a broad range of BMW engines for sale alongside individual engine components — all sourced from carefully dismantled donor vehicles, tested, and delivered across the UK within 24–48 hours (T&C apply).
