You reverse out of a parking space with nothing behind you. The sensors start beeping as if you are about to hit a wall. You sit there, confused, looking at a completely clear reversing camera and an empty road, while the car carries on sounding the alarm.

BMW parking sensor faults are one of the more annoying problems an F- or G-generation owner can encounter, partly because the symptoms are so inconsistent. Sometimes they beep constantly. A damaged sensor wiring loom

The wiring that connects each sensor back to the PDC module runs through the bumper and up through the body. On older F-generation cars, the loom can chafe, corrode at the connector, or develop a break, causing the PDC module to receive an inconsistent signal. The fault codes from a diagnostic scan will tell you whether it is the sensor itself or the wiring supplying it.

Less common than a sensor failure, but it happens. The PDC control module sits behind the bumper trim on most newer models and processes signals from all sensors. Interference from accessories and tow bars

If the false beeping started after a tow bar was fitted, after a number plate surround was changed, or after an accessory was added near the bumper, that is almost certainly the cause. BMW's PDC sensors are sensitive enough that certain materials and angles in the detection zone can cause false triggers. A tow bar that is not properly integrated with the PDC wiring will also disable or confuse the rear sensors.

If your BMW has a tow bar fitted and the parking sensors are behaving erratically, check whether the tow bar was properly wired into the PDC system. An unintegrated tow bar that simply cuts into the reverse light feed will confuse the PDC module every time the bar is attached.
