Common BMW B47 Engine Problems

The B47 is one of the more reliable diesel engines in BMW's modern lineup, particularly compared to the N47 it replaced. But it is not without fault.

1. EGR cooler failure (B47TU primarily)

The EGR cooler on the B47TU has emerged as the most consistently reported fault across G-generation diesel BMWs. The cooler allows exhaust gas to re-enter the intake at a lower temperature, and when the cooler develops an internal leak, coolant enters the EGR system and can travel into the intake manifold. Symptoms are white smoke on start-up (especially when cold), a sweet smell in the cabin, and unexplained coolant level drops.

This is not a catastrophic failure; it doesn't destroy the engine, but it needs addressing before sustained coolant loss causes overheating damage. BMW has acknowledged the issue on some production batches and has covered it under warranty on affected cars. On out-of-warranty G-generation BMWs, it is the first thing to check if any of these symptoms are present.

White smoke from a B47TU diesel on start-up, combined with a dropping coolant level, is not a reason to keep monitoring. It is a reason to stop driving and have it inspected. EGR cooler coolant ingestion can progress to a head gasket problem if left untreated. 

2. DPF and EGR fouling

DPF blockage on diesel BMWs is almost always a usage pattern problem rather than a mechanical fault. Short-trip urban driving prevents the DPF from reaching the temperature needed for passive regeneration. When the DPF becomes blocked, the car attempts a forced active regeneration. If the journey is still too short, the regeneration doesn't complete, and the problem compounds. 4. Swirl flaps

Some B47 variants retain intake swirl flaps to improve combustion at low loads. Swirl flap failure on BMW diesels has been a known concern since the N47 generation; failed flaps can drop debris into the combustion chamber. On a well-maintained B47, the timing chain should not be a source of anxiety.

B47 Reliability: How Does It Compare?

The B47 is a meaningful improvement over the N47 in reliability terms. The three changes that mattered most,” front-mounted chain, mechanical water pump, and Euro 6 compliance updates, addressed the N47's most documented weaknesses. The B47TU then improved on the original B47's EGR and DPF systems, though the EGR cooler leak on some early TU production cars partially offset the progress.

In the context of BMW's diesel range, the B47 sits comfortably as one of the more dependable units. It is considerably less stressful to own than the N47 for high-mileage drivers, and the B47TU represents a further step in the right direction despite the EGR cooler caveat.

The single most impactful maintenance decision for a B47 is oil change frequency. BMW's factory CBS interval is too long for a turbocharged diesel engine. Every 7,000 to 9,000 miles, using BMW LL-04 specification oil is the sweet spot for B47 longevity.
