The BMW 5 Series is a car that rewards careful buying. Get the right one: right generation, right engine, right history, and it's a genuinely excellent ownership proposition. Get it wrong, and you're looking at bills that don't reflect well against the car's market value. Each generation has its own fault profile. Here's what matters for each.

Generation Summary

E60/E61 (2003–2010). The most characterful 5 Series, but also the most mechanically complex of the three. N52 and N54 petrol engines are the reliable engine choices. M57 diesel is capable but demanding. Biggest concerns: cooling system, subframe cracking on diesel models, electric window regulators, and iDrive early-gen reliability.

F10/F11 (2010–2017). The most commonly owned 5 Series on UK roads. The N47 diesel timing chain is the defining fault of the generation. N55 petrol is reliable. Turbo wear on diesel variants at higher mileage. Better overall build quality than the E60, but the N47 concern is significant.

Engines — what to choose

The N52 naturally aspirated 2.5/3.0-litre petrol (525i, 530i) is the most dependable E60 engine. Simple, no turbo, front-mounted chain, strong longevity. The N54 twin-turbo (535i) is more capable but brings injector, wastegate rattle, and high-pressure fuel pump concerns at higher mileage. The M57 diesel (525d, 530d, 535d) is strong under load but has DPF, EGR, and turbo wear to contend with at higher mileage.

Subframe cracking — diesel models specifically

A known structural fault on E60 and E61 diesel models is cracking of the rear subframe mounting points. The torque of the diesel engine and the stress of the rear axle combine over time to crack the body around the subframe mounts. This is a serious structural concern, it is an MOT failure and a safety issue. Any E60 diesel being considered should have the rear subframe inspected thoroughly. Repair is possible but involves welding, which adds high cost.

Rear subframe cracking on E60/E61 diesel models is an MOT failure. Check the rear subframe mounts before buying any E60 diesel. Look for cracks, repair welds, or fresh underseal that might be hiding previous repair work. 

Cooling system

The E60's cooling system uses plastic components that degrade with age. The water pump, thermostat housing, and expansion tank are the most common failure points. On a car now 15 to 20 years old, these are standard budget items. A cooling system inspection and likely partial renewal should be assumed on any E60 purchase.

Other common E60 faults

Window regulator failure (front and rear), VANOS seals on N52 engines causing rattling on startup, and the SMG automated manual gearbox on some M5 models needing pump replacement are the other regularly reported faults. The early iDrive system is clunky by modern standards, but it rarely fails outright.

F10/F11 BMW 5 Series (2010–2017)

N47 diesel timing chain — the generation's defining fault

The N47 diesel, fitted to the 518d, 520d, and some 525d variants, has the rear-mounted timing chain issue that is well documented across the entire BMW N47 range. This is as relevant in the F10 5 Series as it is in the F30 3 Series. A cold-start rattle from the rear of the engine, an absence of chain replacement in the service history, and mileage over 80,000 miles are the red flags. BMW 5 Series F10 engines with the N47 are a conditional buy, not an unconditional one.

N55 petrol — solid and well-supported

The N55 3.0-litre turbo in the 528i and 535i is a much more straightforward engine to own than the N47 diesel. Valve cover gasket and oil filter housing leaks are common over 70,000 miles, but are manageable. The charge pipe can crack. Oil change interval matters: 7,000 miles maximum for a turbocharged six. A well-maintained N55 in an F10 is a long-lived, enjoyable engine.

Turbo wear on higher-mileage diesel F10s

The N57 diesel (530d, 535d) is a stronger engine than the N47 and doesn't carry the same timing chain concern. However, at higher mileages, typically above 120,000 miles, turbocharger bearing wear becomes a realistic cost. The 535d's biturbo setup is particularly demanding. A compression and boost test before buying any high-mileage N57 F10 is worthwhile.

Other F10 faults

Oil separator valve failure, causing white smoke, rear air suspension failure on models with the optional air suspension, and the notorious EGR valve fouling on diesel variants are the other regularly reported items. BMW 5 Series F10 engines, both petrol and diesel, benefit from short oil change intervals given the turbocharged architecture across the range.

G30/G31 BMW 5 Series (2017–present)

B47 diesel — generally solid, one caveat

The G30's 520d and 530d use the B47 diesel. Front chain, much better reliability profile than the N47. The one concern specific to early G30 production is the B47TU EGR cooler leak, white smoke on startup and unexplained coolant loss. This was addressed under warranty on affected cars and should be documented in the service history. Outside of this, the B47 in the G30 is a dependable engine.

B58 petrol — the highlight

The G30 530i and 540i use the B58 3.0-litre straight-six. The B58 has an excellent reliability reputation across the BMW range. It's the same engine in the G80 M3 and the G05 X5 40i. The G30 application is lightly stressed relative to its performance variants, which is favourable for longevity. If reliability is the priority and budget allows, the G30 540i with the B58 is one of the most dependable 5 Series configurations available.

G30 electronics and sensors

The G30 is the most electronically complex 5 Series to date. Parking sensor faults, radar-based cruise control calibration, and the more intricate iDrive OS7 integration generate more software-related issues than older generations. Most are resolved through software updates. The hardware itself is generally reliable; the software is the variable.

E60: Buy the N52 petrol in known condition, budget for cooling system renewal, and check the rear subframe on any diesel. Not a bad car, just an older and more complex one.

F10: The N55 petrol is the most reliable engine in the generation. The N47 diesel is a conditional buy. The N57 diesel is capable but needs high-mileage scrutiny.

G30: B47 diesel or B58 petrol from 2018 onwards. The most reliable 5 Series if the budget allows. Check for EGR cooler history on early 520d and 530d cars.
