Which BMW 2 Series Is the Most Reliable? Full Engine Comparison

BMW 2 Series Most Reliable

The BMW 2 Series covers a lot of ground. There's the F22/F23 coupe and convertible, the F45/F46 Active and Gran Tourer, and the G42 coupe — all called 2 Series, all quite different cars. Engine choice varies significantly across these body styles, and so does the reliability picture. Here's the honest rundown.

The 2 Series Engines: Quick Overview

The 2 Series coupe (F22) and convertible (F23) are rear-wheel drive, body-on-platform cars built on the same underpinnings as the F30 3 Series. The Active Tourer (F45) and Gran Tourer (F46) are front-wheel drive cars. Completely different underneath, and with a different engine range. The G42 coupe is the current generation, launched in 2021.

The engine you have depends entirely on which 2 Series body style and which year. They don't all share the same units.

Engine Reliability at a Glance

Engine

Model

Reliability

Key note

N20 (2.0T petrol)

220i/228i F22 (2014–2016)

Needs checks

Rear timing chain — ask about history over 80k miles

N55 (3.0T petrol)

228i/M235i F22

Solid choice

Proven unit — valve cover leaks commonly, charge pipe wear

B48 (2.0T petrol)

220i/230i F22/G42

Best choice

Front chain, reliable — carbon buildup only real concern

N47 (2.0 diesel)

218d F22 (early)

Avoid

Rear chain, same risk as 3 Series — superseded by B47

B47 (2.0 diesel)

218d/220d F22/G42

Best choice

Front chain — EGR and DPF only if used for short trips

B38 (1.5T petrol)

216i/218i F45/F46

Solid choice

3-cyl character, engine mounts wear, otherwise sound

B47 (2.0 diesel)

218d/220d F45/F46

Best choice

Same B47 as rear-drive cars — solid and well-proven

The Coupe and Convertible (F22/F23) — Engine by Engine

N20 — proceed with caution

The N20 2.0-litre turbo petrol is fitted to early F22 220i and 228i models. The rear-mounted timing chain is the concern. Identical to the N20 issue documented in the 3 Series. On cars over 80,000 miles without a chain replacement history, treat it as a known upcoming cost. The B48 that replaced it is a significantly better long-term proposition.

N55 — a known quantity

The N55 3.0-litre single-turbo six in the M235i and some 228i variants is a well-proven engine. It has been in production long enough that its failure patterns are well understood: valve cover gasket leaks and oil filter housing leaks are common at higher mileage, and the plastic charge pipe can crack under sustained boost. Neither of these is catastrophic. An N55 with a full service history and fresh oil every 6,000 to 8,000 miles is a robust engine.

B48 — the standout choice

The B48 2.0-litre turbo petrol, fitted to F22 220i and 230i models from approximately 2015 onwards and to the G42 coupe, is the most reliable petrol engine in the 2 Series range. Front-mounted timing chain, mechanical water pump, strong reliability record. Carbon buildup on the intake valves is the main maintenance item, a walnut blast at around 80,000 to 100,000 miles. Otherwise, it's a straightforward engine to live with.

B47 diesel — reliable, with usage caveats

The B47 diesel in the 218d and 220d is the diesel equivalent of the B48 in terms of reliability standing. Front chain, no N47-style timing concern. DPF and EGR fouling are usage-dependent; short-trip city driving accelerates both. On a car used for mixed or motorway driving, the B47 is an excellent long-term engine.

The Active and Gran Tourer (F45/F46) — What's Different

The F45 and F46 are front-wheel drive, which changes the ownership dynamic. These are family-oriented cars bought for practicality rather than driver engagement, and they reflect that in their engine range: the B38 three-cylinder in the 216i/218i, the B47 diesel across the diesel range.

The B38's engine mount wear is the primary specific concern. The three-cylinder's inherent imbalance is harder on mounts than a four-cylinder. Budget for mount replacement around 60,000 to 80,000 miles. The B47 diesel in F45/F46 application is the same engine as in the rear-drive cars and has the same solid reliability profile.

 Which 2 Series to Buy?

For the coupe or convertible: a B48 petrol or B47 diesel from 2016 onwards is the most reliable combination available. The N55 is fine with history. Avoid early N20 or N47 cars without documented timing chain work.

For the Active or Gran Tourer, the B47 diesel is the most dependable powertrain in the range. The B38 petrol is adequate, but the engine mount concern is worth factoring in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which BMW 2 Series has the most reliable engine?

The B48 petrol (220i, 230i from 2015 onwards) and B47 diesel (218d, 220d from 2015 onwards) are the most reliable engines in the 2 Series range. Both feature front-mounted timing chains and avoid the fault patterns of the older N20 and N47. The G42 coupe uses the B48 and B47 throughout its range.

Is the BMW N55 engine reliable in the 2 Series?

Yes, with normal maintenance. The N55 in the M235i is a proven, well-supported engine. Valve cover gasket and oil filter housing leaks are common over 60,000 to 80,000 miles, but are straightforward repairs. Change the oil every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, and the N55 is a durable unit.

Does the F22 BMW 2 Series have the same timing chain problem as the 3 Series?

Only on early models with the N20 or N47. The N20 petrol and N47 diesel both have rear-mounted timing chains with the same documented concern as their 3 Series equivalents. Cars from approximately 2015 onwards with the B48 petrol or B47 diesel have front-mounted chains and do not share this concern.

Are BMW 2 Series Active Tourer parts easy to find?

Yes. The F45 and F46 share most mechanical components with other F-generation BMWs, including the 1 Series and early 2 Series coupe. BMW motor parts (B38, B47), suspension components, and interior items are all available through specialist BMW breaker yards at considerably less than dealer new pricing.

Disclaimer: Reliability observations are based on widely reported owner experience and independent workshop data. Individual cars vary significantly depending on service history and use. Always carry out a pre-purchase inspection before buying any used BMW.
